A critical challenge currently facing the nation is our ability to effectively meet society's growing need for clean, sustainable and renewable energy resources. The United States is estimated to have spent over 500 billion dollars on energy needs within the past year, while working toward lessening the country's reliance on foreign energy sources. Although many great advances have been achieved over the past decade, projected future energy needs clearly indicate that new and advanced solutions must be developed to maintain the nation's competitive edge in a growing global economy. Therefore, Drexel University and its world-class team of researchers have committed to leading an effort to move the U.S. to the next era of advanced energy technology.

The Drexel Energy Group, housed within the A.J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute (DNI), is committed to leading research among Drexel University faculty, students, industry partners, and external collaborators. Research areas range from nanoscale hydrogen storage devices to flow capacitor technology. Past and current energy related projects have been supported by the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, The National Science Foundation, and the Department of Army, in addition to numerous industry collaborators. These research initiatives span the interdisciplinary gap and unite academics from across the University and around the world to engage in high impact research and significant advances in the energy field. Energy related research activities at Drexel include Solar Cells, Combustion, Fuel Cells, Batteries, Supercapacitors in addition to various Alternative Energy Sources. Research facilities at Drexel include the Bossone Research Enterprise Center which houses the world-class Drexel Centralized Research Facility, equipped with state-of-the-art materials characterization equipment, specifically designed for the most sensitive analytical measurements as well as a Microfabrication facility.
