Dr. Cristelle Portet, post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, will receive the prestigious DGA Prize from the French Minister of Research and the French Minister of Defense at a ceremony in Paris on January 22. Please click here to read more.

Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. student John Chmiola has been selected to receive a travel fellowship, supported by the National Science Foundation, to attend the European Ceramic Society Meeting in Berlin, Germany from June 17-21, 2007.  Chmiola, who is advised by Prof. Yury Gogotsi, has received NSF IGERT and Graduate Research Fellowships to support his Ph.D. study.  He will present a talk titled “Transforming Carbide Ceramics to Carbon: A Way to Advanced Supercapacitors” at the meeting in Berlin .

November 16, 2006Dee Breger, Director of Microscopy, was noted in an article in the New York Times Science section on Tuesday, November 14th, about the possible impact of a comet or asteroid nearly 5,000 years ago, which may have caused a "mega-tsunami."   Also, Breger was featured in a Chicago Tribune article from November 1st.  Some of her work is on display at an ongoing exhibition at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. 
November 13, 2006Drexel received two Nano50 awards at the National Nano Engineering Conference in Boston, MA, November 9-10.  Dr. Gleb Yushin, research assistant professor, accepted a Technology Award on behalf of the carbide-derived carbon (CDC) development team.  Dr. Yury Gogotsi received an Innovator Award.  The Nano50 awards are sponsored by Nanotech Briefs.  For more information, please click here.

November 7, 2006Two former participants in Drexel/Penn Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) programs received travel awards to attend the National Science Teachers Association regional meeting in Baltimore, MD, November 2-4: Mr. Keyvan Sadigh (RET '05) and Ms. Vijayalakshmi Karri (RET '06).  A networking session for RET participants was held on November 3 as part of the NSTA meeting.  The networking session and the travel award program were organized by Northeastern University and funded by the National Science Foundation.

August 17, 2006 IGERT and NSF Graduate Fellow John Chmiola, advisor Yury Gogotsi, and colleagues Gleb Yushin, Cristelle Portet, and others from the Universite Paul Sabatier in France have published a paper in Science magazine. June 21, 2006 Drs. Yury Gogotsi and Gary Friedman and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania and the Uiversity of Illinois at Chicago received a $1 million award from the National Science Foundation for their Nanotechnology Interdisciplinary Research Team (NIRT) project "Nanotube-based Nanofluidic Devices and Fundamental Fluid Studies at the Nanoscale."
June 21, 2006 Seven high school students who are taking part in the Summer Nanobiotech Camp hosted by Montgomery County Community College came to Drexel today for a field trip. The students saw presentations and demonstrations in various labs in the College of Engineering: the Microfabrication Facility, Dr. Jaydev Desai's medical robotics, the new Zeiss scanning electron microscope, and the Raman spectroscopy lab.
